20/10/2001  SmartFTP : File Transfer Program
If you have some webspace, or even a site that you wish to publish online then you'll need a good FTP program (File Transfer Protocol) like 'SmartFTP'. I use this program everyday and I'm thoroughly convinced that it's the best Freeware FTP program available: I've used WSFTP before and I don't like its clunky, outdated interface. 'SmartFTP' however not only looks great but it has every option necessary for uploading/downloading and modifying files on and off your webspace.
Functions include FXP support, recursive downloads, uploads and deletes, background transfers, resume for all broken transfers, transfer queueing with scheduling supporting uploads, downloads and FXP and up to 16 simultaneous threads with a ultra-fast 'Queue Directory Contents' speed feature, CHMOD (Properties), ASCII and 'Skip File Extension' list, cacheing of remote directories, an attractive Windows/Internet Explorer style user-interface which supports drag & drop within internal windows and from Explorer and much, much more. 'SmartFTP' even has Proxy/Firewall support, a commandline feature for manually entering direct commands and the ability to maintain multi connections both remote and locally.
'SmartFTP' works with Win98/NT4/2000/ME and will also run on Win95 if IE4+, Winsock 2.x and the commctl32, shlwapi and winInet dlls are installed at version 4.72 or higher.

RoughDraft is an outstanding freeware word processing utility which has been specifically created with all the features necessary for writers of poetry, short stories, novels, articles, plays and even screenplays. It has many complex features, yet the interface is practical and intuitive for the writer and presents all its functions in a user-friendly format. RoughDraft can be run in special modes dependent on what style of writing you want to be doing which makes formatting extremely easy, and has comprehensive text/paragraph formatting options inc. numbering and manual indentation. The interface has a handy, tabbed side-panel, which has many features including a 'Pad'section in which the writer can store and save 'ToDo' lists, character/plot summaries and anything else that would otherwise slip from memory when concentrating heavily on something else. The program also has fully comprehensive spell-checking, dictionary and thesaurus facilities, can automatically create manuscript cover pages with word and page counts (useful when submitting your work) and has the essential option of instant floppy disk backup so that your work will be preserved should you suffer an untimely crash or powercut etc. These files are saved in .rtf format which can then be read in the majority of word processors across most platforms.
RoughDraft will import files in Word 6.0, Word 97 and HTML formats and, incredibly, can have up to 100 of these open at any one time. It can even create properly formatted HTML documents of your work for publishing on websites. With shortcut keys, a completely user-friendly Help system and many more features not listed here, RoughDraft is one freeware program that you should simply not be without.
