Love in Vein : Twenty Original Tales of Vampiric Erotica If you enjoy the more mainstream romantic mystique of vampires such as Anne Rice's Lestat, Louis or even Bram Stoker's Dracula then Love in Vein's more subversive take on vampiric erotica may not be for you. I however found this collection (edited by Poppy Z. Brite) a very refreshing change from the flood of pulpy 'vampire lover' novels that are available in bookshops today. My favourite tale in this book is Brian Hodge's delightfully titled 'Alchemy of the Throat'. Written prior to Anne Rice's 'The Vampire Armand' but with many similarities this is the story of a young castrati in the service of an old man who becomes his lover but is also a vampire. As with many of the stories in this book the limits of what we would normally define as 'erotic' are constantly stretched and re-examined. I would really recommend this book to all hardcore vampire fans...and anybody who feels ready to try something new.

Sunglasses After Dark : Nancy A. Collins "Socialite, hooker, vampire hunter and vampire - no one could accuse me of leading a dull life." - Sonja Blue I purchased and read this novel in 1993...now I am going to have to buy it again! The reason? White Wolf Publishing have re-released 'Sunglasses After Dark' as a 10th Anniversary edition to celebrate the success of Nancy A. Collins' hugely popular Sonja Blue vampire series. What is different about this edition is that it has eleven new illustrations drawn by artists that were individually chosen by the author and has many new quotes (excluded from the original editions due to concerns over copyright laws) restored. This new edition also has a brand new introduction written by Nancy A. Collins herself. 'Sunglasses After Dark' is the first of the Sonja Blue series and it has since spawned some excellent sequels (In The Blood, Paint It Black, A Dozen Black Roses and, most recently, The Darkest Heart) which I am sure you will feel compelled to read after this novel. I thoroughly enjoyed 'Sunglasses...' when I first read it and so will you. Now, where did I leave that book token Granny gave me for Christmas?

The Vampyre: A secret history of Lord Byron : Tom Holland Tom Holland successfully weaves the real history of George Gordon, Lord Byron into a horrific yet compelling vampire myth. The story follows the 18th century poets travels from Turkey to Venice and onward to present day London. He charts a series of vampiric events during which Byron becomes a vampire himself and struggles with the dark secret at the heart of his existence. Unlike the traditional Dracula-derived vampire, Tom Holland recreates Byron as a rakish yet forlorn and doomed figure destined to age eternally unless he drinks the blood of his own descendants. And it is in present day London that Byron discovers the nemesis of his last surviving descendant... There has been much speculation associating Lord Byron with vampirism and it is the triumph of this novel that it intensely and vividly serves to convince the reader that there is some truth to these ideas. It is a fanciful tale which seamlessly interweaves fact with fiction to create an incredibly believable book, and one which I would heartily recommend to any reader. Tom Holland's 'The Vampyre' is also published in America as 'Lord of the Dead'.
