VampGirl's Previous Featured Books: Page Two 2002

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Vampires : Jay Stevenson, Ph.D.

I was bought this book as a gift on Valentine's Day and I LOVE it!.
This excellent reference book is written in an easy-going, humourous style, yet is packed full of information about vampires, covering everything from vampire myth and history from Eastern Europe, Greece, Italy and the Middle East to theories about the possible existence of vampires and psychiatric and criminal cases. It even has a Buffy section, along with in-depth information about Anne Rice's characters (particularly Lestat)!. The author of this essential book has written and co-authored many other publications, including 'The Complete Idiot's Guide to Philosophy' and has a Ph.D. in English Literature from Rutger's University.

For those who think they know everything about vampires, this will give you a fresh outlook on the popular phenomenon and maybe even teach you something new. And for those who have never picked up a vampire book before, this is a superb place to start, being brim full of information without being overwhelming with it all.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Pop Quiz : Cynthia Boris

"Knowledge is the ultimate weapon"
- Xander Harris, "Never Kill a Boy on the First Date".

So you think you know everything there is to know about the TV series of 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer'? Why not put your knowledge to the test and see if you can answer questions such as these:

  • What did Giles get as his freebie when he bought a 'Time Life' series of books?

  • What was Buffy's grade point average when entering Sunnydale High?

  • Which episode featured Oz's first glimpse of Willow?

Answer the trivia in this book correctly and you earn one point for every correct answer. Each section of the 'Pop Quiz' is designed for you to add up your score and check the 'Slay-O-Meter' for your rating. Find out at the end of the book whether or not you rate as a Cordette, Slayerette, Willow Study Group member, honorary Watcher or, for those with the top scores, the next Slayer.
The 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer Pop Quiz' is packed with challenging questions about plots, characters, soundtracks and more and even contains a full colour photo insert. Covering Buffy's high school period up to the two 'Graduation' episodes as well as containing quiz sections entitled 'Band Class', 'English 101' and 'Sunnydale's Most Wanted', this book is an essential in any 'Buffy...' fan collection.

The Queen of the Damned : Anne Rice

"After 6000 years of horrifying stillness, Akasha, mother of all vampires and Queen of the Damned, has risen from her sleep to let loose the powers of the night.
But her monstrous plan for ruling the worlds of the living and the undead must be stopped before she destroys her vampire children and mankind, and it falls on Lestat to fight her all-encompassing evil - for it is he who challenged her power by waking her from sleep."

Personally, I loathed 'The Vampire Lestat' and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone above the age of 16. Lestat's obsession with adolescent rockstar posturing and even the name of his band ('Satan's Night Out') were far too much for me to bear - the whole scenario was utterly preposterous and unbelievable and seemed to me to be in complete contrast to the tone of 'Interview with the Vampire' which I absolutely loved. Perhaps this is because I simply prefer Louis as a vampire anyway.
The ridiculously over-the-top volume that is 'The Vampire Lestat' (in my opinion so don't hit me :P) can be avoided as, thankfully, all you need to know about Lestat's 'Rock Superstar' antics are helpfully regurgitated at the beginning of this novel before Akasha is awakened by his rock music. Without giving too much away, 'The Queen of the Damned' is a gripping and exciting novel which introduces many new characters and ideas into this, the third volume in Rice's bestselling 'Vampire Chronicles'. Rice's characters are as fascinating as ever (if not occasionally somewhat fantastical) and her attention to historical detail is superb with dizzying flights of narrative and vivid prose really succeeding in bringing the novel to life.
If you are intending to see the new movie but have never read the original novel then I insist that you do so. If, like me, it's been a very long while since you last read it then do re-read it again before visiting the cinema. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie adapation of 'Interview...' but sadly, from what I've seen so far, I am expecting the new 'Queen of the Damned' movie to be an utter disappointment. Make sure you read the novel before the movie spoils it all for you!
