VampGirl's Previous Featured Books: Page One 2001

Salem's Lot : Stephen King

Ben Mears, the pivotal character of the book, is a writer returning to the town in which he grew up to write a novel about the old Marston house that terrified him so much as a child. The house has recently been purchased for Mr. Kurt Barlow, a vampire styled on Bram Stoker's 'Dracula', by his employee: Richard T. Straker. When the new owner takes residence in the house the inhabitants of the small town of Salem's Lot begin to be gradually but surely picked away one by one and turned into vampires. Mears and one young boy are the only ones that are aware of what is really happening and decide that they alone must confront the vampire in the house on the hill...
This is a fairly slow paced novel to begin with which builds with an intensity that parallels the creeping conversion of the town's inhabitants to vampirism. This eerie pace culminates in a powerful and exciting ending which, though not among Stephen King's best novels, certainly makes this a compelling read.

Dracula the Undead : Freda Warrington

Dracula the Undead" is presented as a sequel to Bram Stoker's "Dracula" following the style and characters of the original novel. It was published by Penguin in 1997 to celebrate the centenary of the original publication of "Dracula". Although I find it strays a little from the intended style toward the end of the novel it is well written and I thoroughly recommend it.
