InoculateIT Personal Edition: Virus Checker
Nothing is more important for a computer connected to the internet than a virus checking program. The one that I use is InoculateIT Personal Edition version 5.2.9 by Computer Associates International which offers complete virus protection with fast scanning and real time protection. The program runs in the system tray of your computer and continuously protects your PC from infected website downloads, internet and email viruses and from infected email attachments. It will also automatically detect and successfully clean viruses that infect the boot sector, file viruses and those nasty macro viruses that infect Office 95/98 and 2000 Word documents, Access databases, Powerpoint files and Excel spreadsheets.
This commercial quality freeware program works for Windows 98/95/ME/NT and Windows 2000 Professional and will even work with the most major non-english languages such as Japanese and Chinese.
InoculateIT Personal Edition is a completely free program with excellent documentation which I thoroughly recommmend that you try out. You will need to register your email with the company to recieve free updates and support. This is well worth doing: they will even send you emergency updates within 48 hours to deal with newly infected files etc that the program is unable to detect or clean. They have minor updates to the the virus pattern almost everyday so this scenario is somewhat unlikely but you can never be too careful.

Internet Surfer: MDI Browser
Internet Surfer v2.54 is a freeware web browser with some excellent features. This useful program uses the Internet Explorer engine but adds extra options such as a handy multiple document interface and the ability to tile and cascade the pages within the browser. You are even able to split windows into four separate pages so you don't ever lose track of where you've been.
Amongst Internet Surfer's many other features there is easy access to IE Favourites and History and even session logging. You can also configure the buttons to have instant access to web-based email and search engines. This is a very small program to install and I recommend you try it out today. Wingrab: Image Capture program
This useful freeware program is my first choice whenever I need to grab screenshots for my software pages. Wingrab is an image capture program which runs in the background and, when a hotkey is pressed, grabs the screen or selected window. You are then given the option to save the image as a jpeg, tiff, png or bmp.
Another useful function of Wingrab is the ability to create thumbnailed index pages. A list of images is created by simply dragging and dropping the files or folders of the images into the dialogue box. These are then swiftly converted into neatly thumbnailed pages. These can be batch printed with a configurable number of images per page.
Wingrab can function as an image viewer and has basic manipulation tools such as crop, resize, reduction to 256 colours, convert to greyscale and a few others. It can even add text comments within jpeg, tiff and png files: handy if you wish to store a note about the image.
Note: I found only one problem when reviewing this program. Wingrab appears to be unable to capture an image of itself. I had to use IrfanView to capture it instead. *groan*
