The Vampyre : And Other Tales of the Macabre : Ed. Robert Morrison & Chris Baldick

The main title in this volume published by the Oxford University Press is Polidori's classic tale "The Vampyre"(1819) which was written on the same evening that Byron's ghost-story competition that also produced Mary Shelley's Frankenstein occurred. The vampire of the tale, Lord Ruthven, is believed to be based largely upon Byron himself, and indeed, on first publication of the tale in 1819 there was some confusion as to who was the original author of the piece. The introduction discusses the central themes and techniques of "The Vampyre" and its developmental influence on later works whilst the Appendices contain material including Lord Byron's prose fragment "Augustus Darvell" which are closely related to its original composition and publication.
Other 'Tales of the Macabre' include the works of James Hogg, J.Sheridan LeFanu, Letitia Landon, Edward Bulwer, and William Carelton.

The Mammoth Book of Vampire Stories by Women : Ed. Stephen Jones

Opening with an autobiographical introduction by the star of the Hammer movies 'The Vampire Lovers' and 'Countess Dracula' Ingrid Pitt, this Mammoth anthology features thirty-four vampire classics written by women from the 1800's to the 21st century. These authors have redefined the genre of vamp-fiction from a female perspective and will enthrall you with these pieces of work.
The first short story in this collection is Anne Rice's only short, 'The Master of Rampling Gate', written in Rice's traditional romantic style in 1986. But Rice is not the only acclaimed writer in this volume: there are classic tales of vampirism from Mary E. Wilkins-Freeman, a reprint of the 1896 novella 'Good Lady Ducayne' written by the victorian 'sensationalist' Mary Elizabeth Braddon and published a year before Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' with a storyline similar to Le Fanu's 'Carmilla' and I was also surprised to find Edith Nesbitt here with an excellent vampire tale : I devoured ALL of E. Nesbitt's work as a child: I loved 'The Phoenix and The Carpet' for example. Contemporary authors include Nancy Kilpatrick, Poppy Z. Brite, Nancy A. Collins's tale 'Vampire King of the Goth Chicks' and Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's Byronic Saint-Germain in 'A Question of Patronage'.
Disregard the cover illustration as it is somewhat misleading: this is a robust and entertaining collection of classic and contemporary female vampire fiction and is an essential volume to place in the 'anthology' section of your bookshelf.

The Vampire Encyclopedia : Matthew Bunson

This superb encyclopaedia contains around 2,000 entries and gives the reader almost everthing about vampires and vampirism they could possibly wish to know. It is in an A-Z format which makes information extremely easy to find and covers many diverse subjects ranging from the usual movie/literature facts to more obscure vampire stories such as the 'Ivan Vassili' incident and the relation of Butterflies with vampirism - which I certainly had no idea about before reading it here.
This is definately a 'must-have' for any vampire researcher and even comes in hardback with a removable dust jacket - just like a good reference book should hehe.
